EXCLUSIVE- Tragic father:"I tried to save my children but I could not"

Murat Akçabay`s  testimony shook. Talking to me for  Alpha-TV he describes the nightmare he lived in the wild waretrs of Evros River. When she saw the water drives the woman and the youngest of their three children.



"I could not save them"
"My wife did not know how to swim and the water dragged her away. She could not let the three children get lost."


When the boat broke, the mother tried to save the 1 year old baby and the father tried to save the two elder boys: "I swam to save my two children but it was impossible to take them on the other side. I started diving but I could not pull them out of the water. I was in the water and as soon as I left where my children were not there … "

His wife recovered on Friday with her only one-year-old child. She still held the child with her  hand …



Every hour of hope passes out for the missing boys. The tragic father is still waiting for good news about his intestine.

"I wish my two children should live. I especially hope for one who had a life jacket. I beg you all my heart to continue the investigations," said the father.




"You do not need a life jacket"
Murat Akçabay  describes the moment the plastic boat overturned. "When the boat approached the other side of the river there were bushes and twigs. The boat met a bush or a twig and started flooding. Then all 11 boat passengers fell in the water."

" We asked for life jackets but the traffickers told us how we did not need them We only have two life jackets with us. We gave it to one mom and the other wearing one of my missing children … "

" We had to leave Turkey to be free … "

" Because of the problems in our country, we had to leave  to be free. If we knew there was a chance that this would happen, we would think better. But we were told that many have already done so, so can we … "says Murat.

Little children are begging at traffic lights in the streets of Athens

With my car I drive to the streets of Athens. Somewhere near an area called Keratsini  I stop at a traffic light. There comes a little girl and cleans my glass. I give her 1 euro. She smiles at me and  says "thank you". Then she goes to the next car. Beside her are  two more  young children.

I park the car , I  go down and approach them. I ask the kids their names . They are Katerina, Dimitris and Giorgos. When I tell them I'm a journalist, the two disappear. "We're afraid of the cameras. Our parents will ruin us " Only Dimitris is left. A beautiful brunette boy with a permissive look.



He tells me he cleans the car windows all day. "Where are your  parents ?" I ask him. "My parents are separated. My mother kept my 4 sisters at home. My father took me because  I am a boy and we live in the street. I clean the windows and with the money we get food because my father does not find a job ".




He asks me if I can help him get into a foundation. "I know a lot of kids who are in a foundation. There they will give me food, clothes and a soft bed. I will not sleep on the road. And I will not be so tired, "he tells me. "And I will probably see my mother more."




In the times of  economic crisis  in Greece  the  children  who work or beg are  unfortunately growing, while many are forced to leave school.
